A colostomy is a surgical procedure wherein the path that food waste takes through your intestines is altered. When a portion of the colon must be bypassed for medical reasons, a new abdominal wall incision is made so that waste can exit. A colostomy is a device that allows you to expel waste products into a bag. The procedure may be done permanently or temporarily.
